buzz-ED™ is a non-profit organization formed to halt the global insect depopulation by elevating bees from livestock status to pet status. As bees are the only domesticated insect, they can serve as the "canary in the coal mine" to help determine the stressors impacting the insect world.

By raising awareness of this precious creature, and raising the level of care given to them (including but not limited to the re-evaluation of insect control), a trickle-down effect should reach other insect species.
Our buzz-ED school curriculum is structured to redefine the ethical care of bees.

By opening the eyes of the children, they’re seeing how important the insects are to life on this planet. Teaching the children that our commonly accepted practices are unethical is a top priority. They’re learning the superior, more effective methods, that should be used instead.

The Curriculum

We've designed the curriculum with the teacher in mind.We understand how busy they are and that most have no knowledge of bees.

Our package makes it easy and fun for them to use with their students. The buzz-ED block can be integrated into Life Science, Biology, Ecology, Gardening, Horticulture or Farming for instance. A block is 9 weeks, but other variations will be made available as needed.

Our highest goal is to make the children adore insects, as this will facilitate the greatest change in how they view the products and services offered to them as adults.

Pilot Program

The curriculum is being written and tested in cooperation with Haleakala Waldorf School in Maui, Hawaii. A bee garden will be setup in the fall of 2019 that facilitates learning not just about the
familiar European Honey Bee, but also native bees.
Due to the temperate climate, Hawaii is an ideal place to work on this endeavor.
We are actively looking for willing teachers in other climates and cultures to assist in testing. If you
are interested please fill out the form below.

The Hive We've consulted the leading hive designers and created a custom hive based on the superior Topbar design. The typical hive that comes to mind is the Langstroth or File box hive. There are many shortcomings with this design that we've alleviated, such as increased ventilation, that will provide a healthier environment.

Another element is the reduction of digital noise inside the hive. Bees are sensitive to the digital signals that we humans are producing, and studies have suggested that unscheduled swarming is a result to trying to find a less noisy home. Those girls worked hard all day, they deserve a little peace and quiet!

With so many students wanting to see the hive in action, we believe it’s important to avoid lifting the lid to observe. It’s disruptive to those busy bees! Our hives have built in viewing windows on both sides so the children can appreciate the work going on without having to disturb the hive.

There are many more design elements that will be released, and included in the backyard version.

The Hive Monitor

A monitor will be in each hive. This data will be used to observe the health of the hive remotely, allow caregivers to be alerted of predators, provide a GPS location in case of theft, and combine the data of other hives which will be made available to researchers who are also interested in the conditions of the bees.

We will also create social networks for the classrooms to compare their data, share photos, and setup the Sister Hives™ program with classrooms internationally.

Dead Bee

What’s killing the bees?

The list of bees on the Endangered Species list is growing each year.
In 2017 the Rusty Patched Bumble Bee was added, as well as 7 species in Hawaii.
Mass bee die-offs is nothing new. Reports as far back as 1869 chronicled the agony of beekeepers as their honey bee colonies succumbed to disease and pests.
